AKG BX20E

We just got our grubby little mits on a very beautiful AKG BX20E stereo spring reverb unit. Widely regarded as the best, it got used on a Philadelphia Grand Jury mix the day it arrived and we can concur! We're giving it an overhaul for good measure, naturally.

For the nerds, see pics inside below. It's essentially a big old tube with 8 springs inside it. It has a smooth, deep tone and a remote so you can control the tail length. Sounds a bit more like a plate than a bouncy dub spring. Can be used as 2 mono springs with different settings, or a mono in, stereo out, or stereo in stereo out. We are in love.

A lot of sessions, a bunch more additions to the studio and a Protools upgrade on the way in the next few weeks, so stay tuned.

Top Of The Pops

So Golden Retriever has gone all big time with British India's 5th LP 'Nothing Touches Me' debuting at number 5 on the Australian charts. You can check out their high rotation jjj single 'Suddenly' below but you probably can't get a ticket to their sold out Australian tour...

Simon has also finished up the mixes for Max Prosa's 3rd record 'Ein Neuer Morgen'. It was tracked in about 500 studios including Clouds Hill in Hamburg, Studio Nord Bremen, Golden Retriever with Simon and produced by Olaf Opel of The Notwist fame. Genius Joe Laporta did an excellent mastering job over at Sterling in NYC. We'll be sure to tell you when that one hits the German charts and for now you can go check out Max's release party at the beautiful and amazing Volksbühne. Click on the picture for more info/tix:

While we're on the subject of charts, we were excited to have Danish chart toppers Go Go Berlin and their production team in for a big chunk of February.

We got to practice our Danish, play a decent amount of Table Tennis and hear how ridiculously loud their awesome Barefoot monitors can go! Looking forward to seeing where they go with mixing and a release by the end of the year. Last time we spoke they were talking about Dave Friddman....

We also started seeing posters all over town with Nessi on them and realised she is kicking butt with her album 'Rolling With The Punches', a bunch of which was tracked here at Golden Retriever. Go Nessi!

Simon has now blocked out 3 weeks of studio time to finish the mixing of the long awaited comeback of his very own band Philadelphia Grand Jury. Hopefully he can stay sane!

Gear nerds can also follow our gear purchases, including the awesome ultra rare UREI 1176s pictured below over at the gear list and be sure to click the links if you want to learn more about the more unique vintage and custom pieces that we have collected.

We are also super psyched and can't wait to share upcoming releases from Ducktails, Charity Children and more, but you are just gonna have to wait. And remember we are still as affordable as ever and accessible to everyone, so get in touch to discuss your project!

Things got serious

here at Golden Retriever in 2014, with musicians and producers from all over coming to do their thing and enjoy our positive, sunlit vibes and warm sounding vintage gear. We made lots of friends, bought heaps of things, improved some others and the studio price remains insanely low, so it's been another great year.

The Creases announced their arrival and continued to kick butt with high rotation on jjj, a slot on the main stage at Splendour In The Grass, a bunch of hi-profile supports and the release of their e.p. ‘Gradient’ through Liberation records. It was produced by Simon between Brisbane and Berlin and you should check out lead single ‘Static Lines’, mixed at Golden Retriever:

Ducktails (aka Matt Mondanile from indie heroes Real Estate) came over for a couple of weeks and recorded a bunch of tracks for his new album with Simon, which are being mixed in LA right now for a release on Domino Records next year. The newly restored Hammond X-66, the super weird Korg DW8000 synth and all the drum machines got a heavy workout. We've been listening to rough mixes but we can’t show you just yet, so here's a classic:

British India booked the whole dreamy summer month of July and recorded their new album with Simon. The first single, ‘Wrong Direction’ was mixed at Sing Sing in Melbourne and has been all over Australian radio:

Berlin locals Charity Children are half way through new recordings with Golden Retriever alumni Jeremy Notham and Enda Gallery. You can check some of their pervious work below:

We can’t wait to show you the new album from young Irish songsmiths All The Luck In The World, which they have been recording here at the studio with fellow Irishman Paul Pilot (Athlete, Duke Special). In the meantime check out the beautiful ‘Never’, tracked in their kitchen:

Passenger got ridiculously huge over the last couple of years, sparking renewed interest in his previous record, ‘Flight Of The Crow’, produced by Simon way back in 2010 and funded by busking when Mike was a pretty much unknown English guy making his way around the towns and cities of Australia. So congrats, Passenger and we’re glad to see the album get some well deserved praise.

We also got the Neotek firing for some hip hop mixes with Brooklyn/Berlin MC and DJ Stimulus. Read about his Stimmi Hendrix project and watch here:

MANY THINGS released new tracks, recorded at Golden Retriever and continue to grow themselves a big fat pie in both the UK and Australia.

Simon also had time to mix a new single for Newcastle group Twin Lakes and it's been getting a lot of blog love:

And finally Simon’s old band Philadelphia Grand Jury convinced each other to get back together and make a new record, bringing Producer Tim Whitten (Go-Betweens, The Necks) over to copilot and mediate. They drove each other nuts but they also wrote and recorded the whole thing in 10 days AND they actually like it. Can’t wait to show you the first single early 2015!

Winter was excellent

We recorded a lot of things, bought a lot of things and fixed a lot of things.

Previously mentioned super-voice, genius and very nice fellow How To Dress Well tracked his new album here last year with Rodhaid McDonald (the xx, King Krule) and you can finally have a listen to the first single, 'Words I Don't Remember.'

Simon mixed tracks for the debut e.p. from The Creases, which he recorded during a week off from tour at The Plutonium in sunny Brisbane. We can't show you the songs just yet, but we can show you this perfect piece of pop, 'I Won't Wait' which saw them sign to Rough Trade and kick SXSW's butt.

MT came over from London to use all of the synthesizers, CV and midi cables at once. The new mixtape is currently being manipulated over at their Clapton Pond studio before being mixed ASAP.

The Euro-based half of Brisbane surf monster Velociraptor also laid down 6 tracks in March. Looking forward to seeing the contest ensue between these 'Raptors and the Australian 'Raptors.

Others to come by and have some musical fun recently were Wax Witches, All The Luck In The World, Red Ink, Kaitlin Reigel and a whole lot more.

And if you head over to our gear list you can see all of the neat stuff we have added to our collection. You should also keep an ear peeled for some profiles on our rarer pieces in the coming weeks. As we said, winter was good to us and naturally we are sharing the good vibes (and $$$) to make the studio a better and better place for you to make your records.

Viel spaß!
